Over the years, I’ve done my share of shopping and know the importance of simplifying your closet. These 5 helpful tips will help you declutter your closet and create space for those pieces you love. Honestly, every woman has to face the challenge of removing clothes they no longer use. If you’re feeling nervous or uneasy, there is no need to worry; these simple tips will help you.
There is nothing like walking into a clean and neat closet. When was the last time you saw a cluttered closet on Instagram? Never, right? I often wondered how people keep their closet space so neat. Like you, I love an attractive, decluttered, and inviting closet.
Like the average woman, our closets are filled with clothes we no longer need or want. We typically run out of space, hangers, and even storage. Instead of removing those items from our closets, we store them in places we can’t see. As the good ole saying goes, “Out of sight, out of mind.” Did you know that decluttering your closet reduces stress and frustrations? Yes!! So if you want to see how you can declutter your closet and remove the stress it brings, let’s dive into it.
Change How You View Your Closet
The first helpful tip to start the decluttering phase is to change how you view your closet. When you look at your wardrobe, you should look at it as being refreshing. When you have a cluttered closet, your mind tends to become overwhelmed and overloaded. Look at your closet as a place of comfort and peace, unlike the chaotic clutter it is. Pinterest is an excellent source of inspiration. Search Pinterest boards of closets similar to yours to help navigate you in the direction of how you want your closet to look.
Remove Seasonal Clothes From Your Closet to Declutter
Do you have every season of clothing piled into your closet? The biggest problem with most women closet’s is that they have all of their clothes in one space—tip number two is to store season clothes in other closet spaces, your garage, or even your attic. Storing your off-season items allows you more freedom in your closet and lets you see your clothes less decluttered.
Declutter Your Closet of Clothes That You No Longer Can Wear
Because every woman has a dress they swear they will wear again, they will hold it, hostage in their closet for years! I get it. I have done the same thing. But, honestly, we are lying to ourselves. As women, our weight fluctuates; therefore, holding onto a few pieces just in case is understandable and acceptable. But only if you know you will be wearing the item more often than not. If you really want to declutter your closet, I’m sure there are more than a few pieces that you can discard altogether. If these items in your closet no longer serve you mentally, physically, or emotionally why hold on to them? You can always donate them to your local thrift, consignment store, or a friend.

Look Over Every Item of Clothing In Your Closet
If you are serious and want to impact your closet significantly, you’ll need to remove every item in your closet. I mean every piece. You can truly declutter your closet by removing everything, placing them on your bed, and categorizing them in piles. For example, you should have a donate pile, a keep pile, and a discharge pile. If I am transparent with you, your keep pile should be less than any other pile you have. Why? Because you want to ensure you don’t end up with a cluttered closet! If this becomes too overwhelming and before you decide to throw your hands up, I want you to stop, take a break and get some fresh air. You can always complete this task in sections, and there isn’t a need to rush the process!
Reduce the Need To “Hold On” To Certain Clothing
If you’ve bought a few items and haven’t worn them because you’re waiting for the perfect accessory to pair them with, it’s time to let them go. Especially if the tags are still attached, and you have yet to wear them after a couple of years. Take it from me; you will find yourself in a whirlwind of trouble because one purchase will lead to another, and you will be back to square one before you know it. Instead, use the accessories you already own to compliment your clothes.
