The Best Hotel-Thompson Main House Review: Playa Del Carmen

Sharing is caring!

When you think about Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, you imagine gorgeous water, authentic tacos, and tequila. But where should you stay while having a night filled with fun? If you’re searching for a boutique luxury hotel with charisma. In that case, I highly recommend the Thompson Main House Hotel in Playa Del Carmen, which offers views of 5th Avenue and loads of shops and restaurants nearby. There are two Thompson properties in Playa Del Carmen the Main House and the Beach House. If you want to stay on the beach, I recommend staying at the Beach House. But if you’re going to stay in the heart of the nightlife, you should stay at the Thompson Main House Hotel.

Location

The Thompson Main House is located on Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue), where premium shops, delicious restaurant choices, and food stands can be found. This hotel is only a few blocks from the Beach House. Because this area is somewhat touristy, we felt completely safe.

Booking Thompson Main House Hotel In Playa Del Carmen

Booking was easy. We booked directly with the hotel via the Hyatt website. During our booking, I took advantage of the work-from-home option, which is excellent for those who may have to work while vacationing. How it works: you’ll book your stay and choose the work-from-home package, and upon arrival, you’re given an additional room where you can work while enjoying your stay. There is no extra cost! It would help to inform the front desk how long you plan to occupy the work-from-home room during your stay. Also, with this booking, we received complimentary American breakfast for two daily and a free 1-day cabana rental. Beware that upon your arrival; the hotel will charge a $500 incidental fee that will be charged to your credit card. Of course, you’ll receive those funds back once you’ve checked out.

Travel Tip: Before heading to any hotel, domestic or international, always call the hotel directly to confirm any additional charges due upon arrival so that you won’t be alarmed when you arrive.

If you’re like me and want to enjoy traveling more, I highly recommend applying for a travel card with excellent benefits. If you’re looking for a great travel card with exceptional benefits, I recommend the Chase Sapphire credit card; this card has been a lifesaver! I booked our stay using my Chase Sapphire card and received 3x points for my accommodations, and I can gain points on daily purchases. I recently bought a round-trip flight using points after receiving 80,0000 points just for signing up and spending the required amount! So far, I love my Chase Sapphire card, and I think you would too.

Checking Into The Hotel

Checking into the Thompson Main House Hotel was simple. The lobby is relatively small, and a concierge services desk will help you set up any excursions or travel plans you may have. Although the front desk attendees speak English, most of the housekeeping don’t. Also, a rule of caution, don’t be alarmed upon arrival when seeing a security guard with heavy-duty guns. They’re there for your protection.

The Rooms At The Thompson Main House Hotel

Check out this Instagram reel that captures the Thompson Main House!

These photos don’t do the room we stayed in justice! The view that we had was amazing. Since the Thompson Main House hotel only offers two floors, we preferred a room overlooking the ocean and 5th Avenue to enjoy coffee while watching the beautiful sunrise. Like most international rooms, the refrigerator was stocked with cold beverages and snacks for a fee. The cost for the drinks wasn’t expensive, but because there were so many local stores nearby, so we opted to grab our snacks and beverages from there. Don’t forget to check out my reel above touring the Thompson Main House room!

The Rooftop Restaurants

The Thompson Main House offers several rooftop options. While waiting for our room, we enjoyed a lovely lunch and cocktails from the rooftop. The food was excellent and plentiful, but the drinks could’ve been stronger. We didn’t spend too much time on the rooftop because we were dying to see what else Playa Del Carmen had to offer us. Here are the rooftop options at the hotel:

  • Alessia Rooftop Restaurant – 6:00 p.m. -12:00 a.m. and 1:00 a.m.
  • Cinco-12:00p.m-6:00p.m
  • Alessia Rooftop Dayclub- Adults Only open 11:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.

Here are a few different restaurant options near the Thompson Main House Hotel in Playa Del Carmen if you want other options. Although there are several restaurants in the area, these were the ones that we chose to dine in. Remember to make reservations to avoid waiting for hours.
