Choosing the right foundation can be nerve-racking, to say the least. You don’t want to choose a too orange or yellow color, neither do you want to choose a shade that is too light or too dark. Frustrating right? I know. Here are a few tips that can help you choose the right foundation no matter the brand.

SKIN TYPE
Choosing the right foundation is determined by knowing your skin type. If you have dry skin, you should choose a liquid foundation with oils. And it’s the opposite for oily skin; you should choose a liquid foundation if you have dry skin. If there are skin concerns such as hyperpigmentation, acne, or scars, you should choose full coverage foundations, especially if you are looking for long-lasting wear. Here’s a breakdown that I think would be helpful:
Cream Foundation
Cream foundation covers those women who would love medium to full coverage foundation. The cream foundation is great for those skin types that have normal to dry skin. This type of foundation is good for hyperpigmentation, scars, and age spots.
Liquid Foundation
Liquid foundations are good for all skin types. As stated earlier, choose a liquid foundation based on your skin. If you have oily skin, choose an oil-free liquid foundation. My personal preference is a liquid foundation with full coverage. If you are uncomfortable or feel that you may not need a full foundation, opt for sheer coverage, which tends to be lighter.
There are different types of foundation choices such as stick foundation, cream to powder, and even tinted foundation! If you’re a beginner at wearing foundation, I will stick to cream and liquid foundations for now. Everything else will confuse you even more.

WHAT IS MY SHADE
Here is the tricky part that stumps women. What is my shade? You don’t want to look ashy, and you don’t want to look like you’re ready for the grave either. The key to not looking like either when you’re leaving the house is in your undertones. Because most foundations will either be cool, neutral or have warm undertones, your complexion really doesn’t matter. Trust me; you will fall into one.
UNDERTONES
Let’s take a look at the undertones. Warm undertones are of yellow, golden, or peach colors. Cool undertone skin color is made up of blues, pinks, or reds. Neutral undertones are made up of both warm and cool undertones. One way to determine your shade is by looking at your veins on the inside of your wrist.
If your veins look more green and olive, you are more than likely, in the warm undertone family. Suppose your veins tend to look more purplish or bluish than you are on the cool undertone side. With a mixture of both these colors combined, you will fall into the neutral family.
The key to figuring out your shade is to choose shades that are close to your skin color. If you match your foundation based on your neck color or with the back of your hands, you are doing it all wrong. Most women of color tend to be a tad bit darker on the neck than on the face. When choosing foundation shades, make sure to pick at least three to test out on your jawline for more accuracy.
If you’re uncomfortable testing out products in a store, that is ok. My advice is to hold up the three shades that closely match your jawline and pick that shade. If you’re not afraid to use the testers in the store, swipe each shade along your jawline. Choose the shade that looks closest to your skin and that absorbs into your skin; that’s the one that is the winner. When in doubt, buy the two closest shades that match your skin. It’s a good point to remember that your skin changes often, so the shade that you choose in the summer may not work for you in the fall.
